Austin PSA

As I'm sure y'all have noticed, lately there's been a lot of spam in our little corner of the blogosphere. A lot of spam. Nasty shtuff. Anywho, back in the day, in the land before time, I used to have word verification on comments (On TRS). E convinced me to get rid of that, so I did, and replaced it with comment moderation. E convinced me to get rid of that too, so I did, and all was well for many moons. Now suddenly we are under attack, and it's quite annoying. What to do? Good Q. Obviously we don't want to stifle anyone's creativity, or the fights that happily happen between two bloggers (call them discussions if you will), but at the same time, who wants to provide a platform for spammers? The Japanese shtuff isn't so bad, because it's in a foreign language, but the other spam? Disgusting. I've taken the simple step of enabling comment moderation for all posts older than thirty days, which seems to have stemmed most of the tide. I think that the spambots detect that their spam isn't going through, and stop trying, or something like that. Far be it from me to suggest that anyone should follow my lead, but I thought it appropriate to say something on the matter.

Yossi said...

why austin? is that where you be for the festival of lights?

The Real Shliach said...

Altie: Yup.

sarabonne said...

Word verification? How could you. This is a dark past you have.

sarabonne said...

Ahem, *how could you?

The Real Shliach said...

Sara: It was a mistake! Please don't hit me!

sarabonne said...

I hit no one. I just throw water...

e said...

Wise suggestion, TRS.

e said...

Sara: this was back when TRS was a young and inexperienced blogger. And no one read his stuff anyways, so it made no difference.

The Real Shliach said...

Sara: true that.

e: thanks.

e2: and once it did make a difference I stopped it!

sarabonne said...

The first hour out of shabbas and all the bloggers are back online...I think we're addicts.

Crawling Axe said...

Not addicts, just responsible carriers of our... err... mission. Hrm...

Altie said...

so, what's the mission?

Crawling Axe said...

What's the mission? What kind of question is that? There is but one answer. Two at most.

e said...

There's the trivial solution: our mission is nothing.

Crawling Axe said...

Our mission is nothing, or our mission is Nothing? Gornisht or Ayin?

Crawling Axe said...

The alternative answer is that we possibly have no lives.

Speaking of that (and this is really a topic for a separate post): how chassidish is it to play dreydel-pong?

Altie said...

chassidish or not, its in my plans this year. anybody?

Altie said...

we call it drunk dreidel.

in any case, there is no mission. you know the rhyme 'how much wood would a woodchuck chuck'?

howabout, 'how bored would a blogger be if a blogger didnt blog? about as bored as he'd be if he did blog, cuz as they say, a blogger is a person with no real life.'

e said...

CA: Now you're offering non-trivial solutions. I suppose your determinant is zero? (I'm studying linear algebra the past few days.)

Anyhow, what's dreidel-pong?

Altie said...

it's like beer pong, but with dreidels. and please dont ask wut beer pong is.

e said...

If the ball lands on the dreidel you gotta drink the dreidel?

Altie said...

lol. i sure hope not. try it, let me know how it goes.

Yossi said...

I'm not sure I agree with the 'bloggers have no life' theory...

Altie said...

according to E, real bloggers are people who invest more of their time into their blogs and their 'online identity' then their actual lives and real friends.

i don't consider myself a blogger. and maybe you are not a real blogger then.

or come up with a different theory that supports your beliefs. thats what everyone else does.

Yossi said...

come on, then none of us are bloggers. more time blogging than our real lives? that would have to be over 9 hours, if we're awake about 17?

Altie said...

remember how u said you were at a shabbos meal with a few bloggers, and surprisingly they 'didnt' do anything weird like call each other by their blogger names, or raise their hands and say 'comment'?

THAT would be a real blogger. i dont think it means physically spending more time online then in real life. im sure its possible, but not probable. it's an attitude. and according to the Board of Blogger Society, I don't think any of us qualify as 'real' bloggers.

Well, maybe TRS.

Yossi said...

whatever. I don't make up the rules, i just follow them. don't hate the game, hate the playa'

whichever of those fits, just apply.

did this blog use to be used for creative writing and stuff? it just switched to a sounding board between the chabad bloggers?

Altie said...

it seems to be dying out. i'm surprised it lasted this long.

i'm not really sure, ask the founding fathers. or mothers.

Yossi said...

who are?

Crawling Axe said...

Dreidel-pong went well, I think. Some pictures to be posted soon, iyH.

Crawling Axe said...

Yossi, instead of complaining, post something creative. Or not creative.

Yossi said...

did you win or lose?
and are you winning or losing if you get smashed?

Yossi said...

hey, i have no achrayus on this blog, i'm not part of it. i can just comment and criticize

Altie said...

you played without me? damn. ok how was?

yossi, this is an invite blog. would u like an invite?

Crawling Axe said...

So, become part of it. Maybe this blog is like the US. If no fresh blood comes in, it begins to stagnate.

Crawling Axe said...

Altie, you wanted me to wait until you came to Waltham?

Yossi said...

it's a big responsibility... I don't know.
what are the rules?

Yossi said...

where's waltham?

Crawling Axe said...

Where's Waltham? Physically or spiritually? When Baal Shem Tov was talking about the "outskirts", he meant Waltham. (Besides Los Angeles, of course.)

I don't know the rules. I was mekareved by le7.

Altie said...

CA, i dunno where thst is, but yes. ok next time.

yossi, i cant invite u, i think only certain ppl can. and ya its a big responsibility but im sure u can handle it.

Yossi said...

someone invited me once last year, i'll look around in my gmail...

Yossi said...

crawling, when were u in la? do we know each other?

Crawling Axe said...

I was in LA in San Fernando Valley for about a week. I've had enough for my whole life.

I doubt we've known each other in LA. Maybe in other places...

Yossi said...

yeah, maybe

e said...

Altie: I don't recall giving that definition.

Yossi: the founding mother is le7. Ask her or trs for an invite.

Yossi said...

it's like they can hear our thoughts...

The Real Shliach said...

Incredible, ain't they?

Altie said...

E, something along those lines.

Yossi, maybe you knew him in another lifetime.

Crawling Axe said...

Altie, as Rambam?

Altie said...

wait, you were rambam, or yossi was?

Crawling Axe said...

Of course I was. Before I was a soldier in the UK army.

Yossi said...

so none of you guys are at the poetry slam? wasn't that tonight?

Altie said...

Awesome. Were you ever king george?

and now you're a nutty scientist.

yossi, its next week. u still have a chance.

Yossi said...

I don't think I'll be in the shchuna for next shabbos.

Altie said...

convenient.

Crawling Axe said...

No, I was the soldier at the same time that King George was alive. Also, I was obviously a Jewish soldier (although it's not clear if I was frum... I was killed when I was young, so it's hard to find out).

Nutty scientist? I wouldn't say so... Maybe in a couple years I can call myself a scientist fully. Right now I am just nutty.

Altie said...

and you know all that how...?

lol. nutty is good.

Yossi said...

and if i was here, I probably would not attend, still

Crawling Axe said...

What do you mean, how? I just know. What, you need evidence for everything? Everything must make sense, have a reason? That's now how we, Jews, roll. We just know.

Crawling Axe said...

re: nutty... Nuts are good in a cake. But I also like cherries.

Altie said...

i hate cherries. im more of a strawberry person. and how do i find out who i was in a previous lifetime?

Crawling Axe said...

You have to open up to truth.

Cherry and chocolate chip is the best parve ice cream in the world.

I hate strawberry jam. In Russia they give it to you when you're sick. And wasn't there a ban on strawberries? Too many bugs or something...

C said...

You guys are crazy!! When I saw the number of comments, I kinda looked forward to an interesting or at least enlightening conversation. I should have known better.

Crawling Axe said...

This conversation was not enlightening?

Where there is no light, you should be the light yourself. Or something... Now I sound like Misha.

sarabonne said...

Well I'm always up for blowing things up. I like blueberries.

sarabonne said...

And regarding our social lives, I think it's an inverse relationship.

Crawling Axe said...

Sarah, have you read this article?

Blueberries are not bad. But I like watermelon more.

C said...

Well, Sarah-come over tomorrow for menorah lighting. Hopefully fires will be contained, but will be fun nonetheless.

sarabonne said...

Well if you dip your gum in citric acid somethign is bound to happen. Gosh. Watermelon is nice, I like the colors. When I was a kid I tried to see how far I could eat it to the rind. Not very tasty after awhile.

Yossi said...

"I was, but am not"

sarabonne said...

C, I'll be there lady.

Altie said...

CA, sometimes im so open my brain falls out.

frozen strawberries. smoothies. yum.

i think this community is whacky. im talking abt bloggers. weirdos. seriously. its like an alternate universe. like speaking cling-on. and no one else would understand...

i'm so glad i'm normal.

Crawling Axe said...

Keep telling yourself that. :)

Altie said...

gasp! lol. okay well, if im not normal, then you are crazy.

Dowy said...

ohh i cant believe i missed all this blogging activity, i was captured to play some music...anyway, i think the word verification is great, it gives you new words to think about their meanings, like 'bingste' or 'stsmsy'...

Crawling Axe said...

Altie, we already established that. :)

Altie said...

right, right. okay fine.

Crawling Axe said...

Promised picture of dreidel-pong.

Feivel ben Mishael said...

Sorry saw the words "dreidel pong" and then skipped all the way down to the comment box.
How do I play?
It's the same thing as Beer Pong or what?

Crawling Axe said...

Yeah. With a dreidel. Except the local shliach and the “committee” decided that in each cup there will be water, and when a cup is hit, the person will drink from a bottle in his hand. To minimize the spread of germs.

Losers...

Crawling Axe said...

Another one

Feivel ben Mishael said...

also this

"When I was a kid I tried to see how far I could eat it to the rind. Not very tasty after awhile."

ditto.

Altie said...

oh that actually is dreidel pong. i had in mind drunk dreidel, which is different. man, how many dreidel drinking games can you think of?

Feivel ben Mishael said...

Power Dreidel:

Drinking Game played with four dreidels. At players turn, player spins four dreidels and does each action associated with the symbol.

Nun - Nothing happens

Hai - (Beer) Drink Half of your beer. (Mixed Drink) Drink once and spin again. (Liquor) Half shot

Gimel - Give a drink to someone else.

Shin - (Beer) Chug it. (Mixed Drink) Take three. (Liquor) Take a shot.

from: Urban Dictionary

e said...

pardon my bigotry, but what kind of gay game is that? You drink water?

Crawling Axe said...

No, you drink beer from the bottle in your hand vs. from the one of the cups, which the dreidel (or the ping-pong ball) hit. To minimize the spread of germs.

As Sarah would says, pansies.

e said...

That's what happens when you take a game meant for drunken buddies and make it into an official Chabad House event.

Crawling Axe said...

That's the avoida of our generation: to take beer pong and turn it into dreidel pong.

Rabbi Lars Shalom said...

this one is boring...borrrrrrrrrrginnnnng

Crawling Axe said...

I hope you didn't read until the end then.

The Real Shliach said...

Lars: It's a PSA, it's supposed to be boring.

Anonymous said...

don't mean to be a meano. but lars is a certified nut.

The Real Shliach said...

So I've gathered.

Altie said...

oh are we ribbing out bloggers now? hmmm who should i say something mean abt now?

The Real Shliach said...

There's a vast difference between "bloggers" and Lars. Just saying.

e said...

touche!

e said...

That's "Rabbi Lars" to you.

There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also.
